American sportswear is very much the trend of the season. The fall collection at Lacoste is a brilliant example of the desire to get away from the mix and match/Topshop/high-low looks of the past few seasons, and into a total look from a designer that doesn't feel too matchy-match. This collection had strong references of Claude Montana and Diane Keaton, but I really thought of late 70's illustrations, where the people looked healthy and happy, and the clothes were reminiscent of a designer's point of view rather than an attempt to sell product to keep the business afloat.
It made me think of Halston, who began the hi-low world, which like the mortgage crisis, got the fashion world into the trouble it's in. Fashion became so democratic, that it lost the ability to be unique. In trying to appeal to everyone, and make loads of money, there is such a bland sense to the world of fashion that the ideas that wow us all are few and far between.
The Lacoste show was a great interpretation of ideas.
